I recently met with Lex McCorvey, Head of the Sonoma County Farm Bureau, to discuss the wants and needs of our local agriculture. Our agricultural community only comprises 1.5% of Californians, but they're responsible for much of the food in California. Their biggest need is to have someone in Sacramento who will actually listen to and work with them as opposed to just giving lip service, saying yes then doing the same old ineffective stuff anyway. They want politicians who will work with them and try to understand their needs.

Drakes Bay Oyster Company deserves our support
In our zeal to help the environment we can't destroy the companies that are doing their best to work with the environment. If there is a company that exemplifies environmental protection and sustainability, Drakes Bay Oyster Company is it.
I visited the oyster company and was lucky enough to get a tour from manager Scott Yancy. He told me how they produce 60% of the oysters in California and their long history stretches back almost 100 years. They have
three different federal organizations checking the quality of oysters, including the FDA. They are also working with local universities to create reefs to help reestablish local oyster population. Drakes Bay is a company that deserves our support not only for what they provide, but their long tradition of supporting the environment.

What's going on with higher education?
My recent conversation with Sonoma State University President, Dr. Ruben ArmiƱana and Dan Condron covered some hot topics including:
If we want to truly change the educational system, we need to shift money from prisons to schools.
- how severe budget cuts are hurting our educational system
- the priorities of California are skewed; we pay $43,000 to house a prisoner, but only $11,000 to teach our children (per person)
If we want to truly change the educational system, we need to shift money from prisons to schools.

Election Update in Marin Independent Journal
Today saw a few more names joining in the race for the District 10 Assembly seat. This will be an exciting race.

"There is also no shortage of interest in the primary for the new District 10 state Assembly seat, where six candidates have filed.
The field consists of San Rafael Councilman Marc Levine; Alex Easton-Brown, an Inverness sociologist; Connie Wong, a Corte Madera real estate agent and a retired California Air National Guard major; H. Christian Gunderson, a Petaluma chiropractor and family counselor; and Assemblyman Michael Allen, who moved to Marin soon after redistricting erased his Santa Rosa-based district. All five of these candidates are Democrats. Peter Mancus, a Sebastopol lawyer, filed in Sonoma County; he could not be reached Friday for information regarding his party affiliation.
Local election officials said the Assembly race may be closed now because Allen, an Assembly incumbent, is running; they're waiting for confirmation from the Secretary of State's office."

Marin Realtors Meeting
I recently had a great meeting with Eric Segal and the Board of Directors for the Marin Association of Realtors to get a greater understanding of the needs of realtors and the current housing crisis.
I support keeping the Department of Real Estate a separate agency in California. They are a 1st rate agency & do an excellent job. Folding them into a larger organization would quickly diminish them to a 3rd rate agency.
